POETRY FORMS: Blank Verse - by Ann

A type of poetry that has influenced the craft for centuries is Blank Verse. This form has a regular meter, but no rhyme. Often, iambic pentameter is the form that is used in many 20th century poems, although its origin dates back to the 1500s. First, here are a few definitions before you get started.

Meter – Basic rhythmic structure of a line with 'feet' or sequence of stressed and unstressed syllables alternating in a particular order.

Rhyme – Repetition of sounds in a sequence of words (tree, free). Often used at the end of lines of poetry.

Iambic Pentameter – A series of 10 syllables in the order of unstressed/stressed syllables or 5 sets of unstressed and stressed syllables. For example from Romeo and Juliet:

"That thou her maid art far more fair than she"

Blue is the unstressed syllable

Red is the stressed syllable

Robert Frost's poems are famous for his use of this form. His poem "The Road Not Taken” illustrates the use of iambic pentameter in a variety of ways. Shakespeare was very fond of this form and nearly all his plays utilized iambic pentameter. Research their work and give blank verse a try!

POETRY FORMS: The Cinquain - by Ann

A Cinquain is a five line poem that follows a specific format. While there are many variations of this style of poem, one of the most common follows the following pattern:

Line 1 – a one word title of two syllables that is usually a subject or noun.

Line 2 – a two word phrase that describes the title and is four syllables.

Line 3 – a three word phrase that describes an action that relates to the title and is comprised of verbs and is six syllables.

Line 4 – a four word phrase that uses adverbs or adjectives to describe a feeling relating to the main topic and is eight syllables.

Line 5 – one word of two syllables that refers back to the title.

A Sample Cinquain:

Roses

Dainty blossoms
Waving, bending, blooming
Joyfully gifted, bringing love
Beauty

Considering the number of other variations, why not check out the other forms you can try? Research the topic by typing "Cinquain" in your search engine and get started today!

In particular, thanks go to all those who chose to either donate financially, supported the site by subscriptions, or gave the valuable gift of their time. This community would not exist without you. Those of you who serve as Moderators and as Featured Poetry raters make a world of difference. We should also thank those who have volunteered content, for example, Ann and Pamela, as well all those who have made suggestions via the Forum. You have all been important to the success of the site. Together, all of you have a hand in creating and maintaining the vibrant and caring environment of our website. All the best to you in 2010!

Second, in recogntion of the importance of communications to members of our user community, site tools have been improved. Members can now view their last dozen individual and group comments. An indicator is provided which shows whether or not each received poem comments have been replied to. In addition, historical statistics are now privately provided to assist each member in determining how often they reply relative to their peers. Our goal is to encourage all to reply to commenting on their work and create an environment where each member strives to improve their product.

Third, don't forget to check out our new event calendar for upcoming poety-related events! You can use this to advertise member and site-related events. You'll find a mini-version of the Poetry Event Calendar on our home page which expands to a full-size calendar when you click on the current month. Since he Calendar is viewable both by the public and all members, we hope you'll find it useful to inform everyone about what's happening in the realm of poetry. Anyone can send a note to Administration to advertise an poetry-related event, however, Premium subscribers can directly add their own events! More information about the Event Calendar is available in this Forum post!

NEWS FROM OUR CREATIVE MEMBERS!

These new tools, available exclusively for Premium members, allow creation of Writing Groups which facilitate the management and publication of drafts by groups of our members. Each group has their own picture profile and produces the writes in similar fashion to that we are used to, except that they are immediately viewable in each member's profile as well as the group profile. Several types of groups are available to suit your creative needs, including Ad-Hoc and Invite-Only. The former type allows Premium members contribute immediately using the "Click 'n Join" feature. More information about Writing Groups is available in this Forum post! We hope these new capabilities will stimulate additional collaboration, commenting, and dialog between our members.

Simply posting a link is insufficient and redundant. The requirements are right here. Please notify a Moderator or Administrator if you are in doubt. Violations are considered plagiarism and as such are taken very seriously. Poems and member profiles containing pictures, music, video, etc, without artist names are subject to removal and authors are subject to suspension without further notice. WHAT'S NEW AT CREATIVE-POEMS.COM?

First, Creative-Poems will be transitioning to a faster server during the last week of March. Be aware that this may entail some brief interruption of service. We'll post the time and date of the transition in the Forum as soon as possible. Should you notice errors when the sites is up, please let us know in the "Site Bugs" Forum. We appreciate your patience as we improve site infrastructure.

Second, please be aware our staff continues to emphase our site's requirement for proper credit to all sources of links and digital articles in poems and profiles. This includes current and older works. For example, if you link to photos, you must name the photographer whose work you are using. If you use MIDI's, audio, or video files produced by others, you must identify the author and copyright owner. There is a Forum update outlining new requirements right here. This issue has become increasingly important and lawsuits have recently forced some rather large and popular sites to adopt stricter requirements. Here at Creative-Poems, we have a tradition of requiring proper citations. This affects all submissions with immediate effect, meaning that all your material should be put it into compliance by May 31st. Non-compliances are subject to removal. If you need assistance, please notify a Moderator or Administrator. Violations are considered plagiarism and are taken very seriously here. Do your part to ensure compliance of your site.

Third, if you're here as our guest, we invite you to try a trial membership. There's a lot more to our site than you see. Post your own poems, receive feedback, share your feelings and comments with other members, and participate in our site events. Click right here for features and more information. We also hope you'll consider the benefits of subscribing to our site. Dispense with the adds, take advantage of all our features, and help support our site by subscribing. WHAT'S NEW AT CREATIVE-POEMS.COM?

First, please be aware our staff is currently emphasizing our site's requirements for providing proper credit to all sources of links and digital articles in poems and profiles. For example, if you link to photos, you must name the photographer who's work you are using. If you use MIDI's, audio, or video files produced by others, you must identify the author and copyright owner. There is a Forum update outlining new requrements right here. This issue has become increasingly important and lawsuits have recently forced some rather large and popular sites to adopt stricter requirements. Here at Creative-Poems, we have a tradition of requiring proper citations. This affects all submissions immediately and all your material should be put it into compliance by May 31. Non-compliances are subject to removal. If you need assistance, please notify a Moderator or Administrator. Violations are considered plagiarism and are taken very seriously here. Do your part to ensure compliance of your site!

Site News! (09/30/2006)

Celebrating our Fourth Year! Join us in celebrating the fourth year of Creative-Poems.com. On September 4, 2002, after months of work on site code by the founding members, the first poem was recorded here. Since then, our site has enjoyed four years of patronage and attention by our members and much hard work by present and former staff members and moderators! In recognition this event, we are holding a Special Poetry contest this month!

To enter during the month of September, members may post their writes about our site to the "Holidays and Observances/Creative-Poems 4th Anniversary" sub-category. Each member may submit one of their poems from this category as a Special Contest entry. At month's end, our anonymous but esteemed panel of judges will pick four winners for cash prizes and/or subscriptions! Check the Forum for details. Get your entries in right away!

Many thanks to Pamela Lamppa for her splendid custom graphics!

WHAT'S NEW AT CREATIVE-POEMS.COM?

First, anonymous volunteer raters are needed to assist the Featured Poetry contest. If you're interested in helping out, please read the description of the rater's duties provided in the Forum's Opportunity Center. Then, send a personal message to Jolen.

Second, to facilitate more effective critiques here, we've added Critique Preferences which appear prominently to potential commenters. These allow writers to specify the extent of critique they would like to receive either in general, or on a specific write. Check the Forum details on this and other new features.

Third, in recognition of the impact of September 11, 2001 on so many around the world, we've reserved a special place on our site, "Holidays and Observances/Remembering September 11". Stop in, pause for a moment, and share your feelings or your story.

I feel safe now, and like I actually have a future, and I know that there is no one else I would rather spend my life with. I have everything now that I could have ever asked for and more."

Nathaniel says: "I know I really am blessed to have such an amazing and beautiful young lady as my bride to be, the road hasn't always been easy but some times it's the things that are hardest in life that are most worth it. I really feel complete now and I couldn't have asked for anyone better. I would like to take a second to thank everyone that has really stuck by us and also to thank Richard for allowing us to share our news with all of you today."

Five Items for You!

First, it is our pleasure to announce that Barbara Demasson has been accepted by the Saskatchewan Writer's Guild to attend their "Writer's Experience". A professional poet will be attending this workshop along with a small group of other writers chosen from the province. Congratulations, Barbara!

Second, is our huge honor to thank both Sandy Hradil and Sherri Emily for their permission to use their wonderful SIG image libraries.

These are pre-loaded images within our site that you may link to and use on our pages. Although you are not required to in this case, it's good practice to show your appreciation to them as you should any other artists, by including their names in your "About" section.

Third, with regret I announce the resignation of Barbara Demasson . Barbara has worked hard as your Assistant Administrator for over a year. A tireless worker, one who always stepped up to the plate to give her full contribution. Barbara has served her term and now wishes to get back to her wonderful writing. This is a taxing position, folks, and we can only ask just so much of our best writers before they deserve a chance to rest and just enjoy the poetry that brought us all here. Creative-Poems.com owes her a tremendous debt of gratitude. Join me in thanking her!

Fourth, be aware the Terms of Service Agreement (TOS) has been revised.

Users are required to identify the owner of any content (including, text, lyrics, poetry, images, or music) they type, link to, or upload to our website. In the latter case, they must also prove they have the permission of the owner. This information goes in the "About" area. This applies to new and old work. This is a condition of Service.

Users of images within the SIG's of Sandy Hradil or Sherri Emily are, of course, exempt from this condition as they have granted our users permission to use their work here. We would encourage you to thank them anyway in your "About".

Don't wait to comply, particularly if a large number of items are involved. New work will be screened closely for violations and warnings will be issued. Ultimately, accounts will be at risk of suspension for non-compliance. Treat other artists as you would wish them to treat you. Check the Forum for additional discussion.

Fifth and finally, Gold Dust Magazine is looking for submissions into their 2006 Calendar.

All are encouraged to send worthy news to Administration!
