~Homicide by Neglect - In Honor of Rose Kelley~

Little Rose Marie Kelley,

had eyes of green that were flecked with gold.
 She endured so much pain in her short life;

she was only five years old.

In a home full of garbage and filth,
she had a head full of lice and was bitten by fleas.
She and her siblings knew of nothing else,
and no one could hear their pleas
.

There wasn't much food in the cupboards,
and you could see her frail little frame.
They say that she was malnourished,
so I ask now who then is to blame?

Did these parents not know any better,
or did they plain just not care?
Or was this child just a sickly one,
and someone should have been more aware?

Little Rose was deathly ill,
but no medical treatment was sought.
Five days later little Rose lay dead,
and now so many are left distraught.

Health and human services failed this child,
in the worst possible way.
If there had been more intervention,
possibly Rose would still be here today.

But today she is living with the angels,
where I know she is safe and warm.
Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
no one can do her any more harm.

Author's Notes:
I am truly saddened by the death
of this small child in Flint, Michigan, June 3rd, 2006.

Truly she did not deserve to die
from "Homicide by Neglect"
as the coroner ruled.

The other 3 children were removed from the home,
in which I feel under the circumstances was justified.

The mother stated that she was worried that someone
would take all of her children away if she took
little Rose to the doctor with a head full of lice.

Instead she allowed her child
to die of cirrhosis of the liver.

Very sad indeed.

Update 12/15/06:

Both parents were given
lengthy prison sentences
for the part they played
in their daughter's death.
Justice was finally served for Rose.

It happens more often than you think and i will never understand why anyone would not take  the best of care to the most precious things in the world  Rose died but hopefully her siblings will have abetter life for it    the parents are not all to blame  though  I think they should be castrated so as not to chance bringing any more babies into thier world of neglect  Im sure that lots of poeple turned a blind eye to what was going on    this poem makes me angry at parents who are so careless I wish there were a way these brain dead folks would  wake up  before it is too late

as far  as Justice little rose has no need for that as you said she is in gods loving hands  and no more harm will ever befall her  i hope this poem will wake up even one other dumb parent  If someone has a child and cant take care of it then they should give it away to someone who will  in our society that is frowned apon but it would have been much kinder than the fate of poor little rose

Karen, this is one heart breaker! Never ever should a child have to suffer like this. This breaks my heart, I just want to take little Rose Marie into my arms and keep her safe, but she is in a better place now and I know God is keeping her safe from all harm. This is just so sad. This happens way to often and our poor system has neglected so many children. Thanks for sharing this write. America needs to wake up and take notice of all our children. God bless you dear for sharing your beautiful heart once again.

Karen - I can't fathom the depth of neglect that caused this tragedy.   No child deserves this, especially one so young.  The parents in this tragedy should be commited.  Congratulations on the award.

This poem is a true tribute to this little girl; if no-one else cared....it is obvious that you did!  Congrats not only on your poem, but also on your compassion for this small child.

God Bless

Truly, this is a tragedy. How very heartbreaking...especially the fact that she didn't have a chance, when both her mother and Health and Human Services failed her.
Congratulations and thank you for acknowledging Rose with this poem.

The death of a child, a time of deep sadness for a life that yet only started to live...

Just because a couple can have offspring doesn't make them parents.

Being a parent is having a loving commitment to raising and cherishing one's children.

Parents who do not try, do not deserve to have children!

Great work, truly deserving of its award!

Such a sad story. It brings a tear to my eyes.
The most painful thing is this is not the only incident of this kind.
You wrote with such love and caring it flows through every word.
Love Ya...........Tracy
