Talk to an Iraqi

I was watching a real "reality" program on the Showtime channel the other night. Maybe some of you saw it. A young Iraqi, who lived under Saddam and under American occupation, talked with average Americans about the conditions in Iraq.

This young man would set up a collapsible booth on various American streets, with the banner, "Talk to an Iraqi" above his head. People would pass by and converse with him on the subject of Iraq.

I was struck by the number of Americans who would tell this young Iraqi how grateful the people of his country were for the continued American presence on their soil. The young man answered one such comment by saying that most of his countrymen didn't understand why America had invaded their homeland, in the first place.

One arrogant American man told this fellow that it was good that the American military enforced strict curfew laws, as any good parent would enforce curfew rules on their own children. He told this Iraqi man how much better off they are, now that they are free.

The Iraqi countered this idea, telling the gentlemen that the people of Iraq only thought they were living in Hell when Saddam was in power. Now, they can't even go out into their own streets for fear of car bombs.

The American, undaunted, said, "But you weren't free."

Author's Notes:
Maybe we really don't have the moral authority
to invade any country we like...

Nah!....We're AMERICANS!

I feel sorry for this nation. It was truly loved by the world. And look at my regretful state now...

Excellent piece... A British friend of mine came back from Iraq a year or so ago and he's not the same person...

Thanks for sharing that.

Regards,

Antony.

One hundred percent correct Len! We are so filled with ourselves as a country that it sickens me! Maybe I'm wrong , but I don't remember Iraq asking for our help. We don't have a right to invade another country, maybe that's why we are treated with such disdain around the world, we can't mind our own F*****G BUSINESS!!!! Said as only you can Len, great work!  Henry

What once was a noble cause has been stained by misdirected pride and overconfidence...

Dear Len-
Wellll----They say freedom comes with a price---
Helllll---I notice that each time I pull up to a gas pump--LOL--

As always your finger is checking the pulse of this country just to make sure we're still alive-
I could leave my own political thought here but I believe this one says it all already-
Hope all is well for You and Yours My friend~
Peace~

I think someday Colin Powell will come clean about his presentation in front of the U.N.  Obviously Bush never will.

I understand your frustration Len. I feel that things are just too convoluted for words now. I mean many of the arms used to kill Americans were sold to the people by the Americans. Its all become one huge mess.

Some Americans hide from the reality of the war because that allows them to do nothing.  Other, a few I hope,  believe the lies and propaganda the Bush administration feeds the public.  Were the Iraq's living under a harsh dictatorship, yes but the UN or the Iraq's theirselves were the ones to remove Saddam. The war began as the result of lies and is about oil and money.  We are protecting Middle East oil countries because American oil companies are making historic profits while the middle class struggles to keep what they have.  There will be congressional investiagtions because the Republicans in the House and Senate are leaving Bush like rats leaving a sinking ship.  The truth has a way of getting out.  Somebody voted Bush in office and then    re-elected him.  He now has the lowest approval rating in 50 years.  Ask your self, are you better off now then you were 8 years ago?
