They beat the man
And they beat him hard
They killed the man
Then signed his card
They ticked the box for homicide
As they kicked the man until he died
This for you and this for me
This for us so we are free
If I was stood there in that room
As the man lay dying on the ground
All the soldiers stood around him
Like a fox besides the hounds
Would my courage stop this
Could I raise my hand at all
For punishment would come to me
The reward would seem so small
I’d like to think I could
As I stood there with my gun
But whether I really would
Well what would you have done?
They beat to death this Afghan man
That’s what they did at Bagram
The man was twenty-two
A normal kinda guy
He drove a taxi for a job
And he didn’t have to die
An unfortunate scenario
That placed him there in time
To pick up a local cab fair
Was that some kind of crime?
Dilawar had a strong spirit
A spirit that went unbroken
Even when they hounded him
And then kicked his body open
For anyone who’s got a brain
Knows this thing exists
Easier to stand and kick
Than to stop the flying fists
You are the follower of the man
You dance and he will sing
He hangs on to your life
Like a bull hangs on to its ring
You’re the man just doing orders
Like the nut and bolt machine
Dilawar lived in moments
The likes of which we couldn’t believe
And your flag is waving high
The way it waved before your birth
With everything it stands for
What it symbolises to this earth
Where are all you intellects
What has happened to your soul
Take control of your country
Before it turns as black as coal
Dilawar has gone from here
He believes he’s gone to god
And if he has then that’s alright
But if not then what’s he got
And to all our children here
Who someday come to say
Have you ever killed a man?
What d’he do to end that way?
And when you talk of circumstance
When you justify your ways
Then you had better hope that god
Is just a tall tale common phrase
And if your body dies
And your mind goes out
You may for one time realise
What life is all about
Dilawar I do respect you
And one day we shall meet
I understand your culture
And I do not judge your beliefs
And though I sit in ancient Europe
Pencil in my hand
I can read the quiet whispers
That echo around the land
To the one who’s mind
Is like a the darkest day
The universe has not the time
For you in any way
And though you are so powerful
And anger may control
Be a man and suffer
This Castigation of your soul
The only single good
That can come from Dilawar
Is when you realise how to carry
This un disguisable scar
For every nation bows its head
At something that it’s done
Don’t let this arrogant sky
Cloud the forgiving sun
And stand alone in quiet reflection
In respectful ponderous thought
For those who gave their lives
And who never even fought
