You Didn't Come Home

Nature Photography - grieving flowers

3:15am
I think I can hear you coming home
I always said,
"You'd wake the dead with your noise"
But secrectly?
It was a comfort
A sign you were safe
I stumble downwards,
My slippers falling off
Every two stairs.
I reach the bottom.
Your shoes aren't there.
You didn't come home.

I shuffle to the kitchen
To make a cup of tea.
Two mugs lay on the counter.
One empty.
One full.
I empty your mug into the sink
Ready for the next round.
I made it for you last night.
I thought you'd like to sit
with me like old times.
But you didn't come home.

I ponder as to why it is
I'm sitting by myself.
And why my shoes
sit alone without yours.
Then I remember.
3:15am.
Walking home from town.
Vodka fueled minors.
A dare gone wrong.
Broken ribs.
A bullet to the chest.
You didn't come home.

You couldn't come home.

Dear Hannah-
One of the things I always like about your writing style is how
already stated below, you can draw the reader into a certain thought
pattern and then WHAM-Slam the reader into a complete dose of reality-
This ability tends to make the reader really stew over the subject-
I Know-It did it to me-LOL-
Hope Yer doing well and that life is kind during these hard times-
Best Wishes to You and Yours My Friend~
Peace~
James

Wow... never saw that coming!  You've always had a way of sucker-punching your readers wth unspeakable tragedy... I hope this is not a constant reflection of your life, Hannah.  I would lik to see good things happen to you.  Very strong write, here.  You rock!
