George's Great Escape
George's Great Escape

he was a ceo
of a prominent cement company
at the age of thirty

his cement made
many of Atlanta's most notable
buildings for years

then one day when he was
forty-four years old
they found him passed out
in his office

he had suffered a major
brain stroke
that left him paralyzed

his brain was still
as active as before
yet his body
he could hardly
move at all

with no other family around
he was stuffed in a
nursing home for years
only to have a few
regular visitors

at the age of sixty-two
he suffered a major fall
that forced doctors
to open his brain
and drain some fluid
to relieve brain pressure

once this was done
his mind became even sharper than before
one evening with all of his might
he made his great escape
out of the nursing home
sliding front doors
hoping never to return again

after going around the
block and up the hill
about a mile away
a security guard spotted
where he had fallen in a
grocery store parking lot
right beside his walker
he had a train ticket
to Boston in his coat pocket

George was thinking
clear enough to make
a run for it
to get out
of that damn
nursing home
forever

let's hope he gets
his chance again
Author's Notes:
True story.  My friend goes to visit him once a week.  I was excited for him that he made a run for it. I hope he gets the chance again soon!
