The Caledonian
The Caledonian

Peat brown the sepia waters,
Natural courses are contained,
Cascading over waterfalls,
These pools in stone sustained

Levels pegged for permanency,
Buckets dragged by heavy lines,
Blueprints drawn and altered,
Laboured men of varied kinds

Broken ballast blasted,
Black powder in the holes,
Puffer ships that followed,
Men laying tailored stones

Divers in their helmets,
Locks that drained and filled,
For ships that sailed through mountains,
Passed sheep that graze the glen

Where legends still live in this canal,
The Caledonian
Author's Notes:
I have just completed a voyage through the Caledonian Canal that connects the east and west coasts of Scotland. It links some of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland.

Well done, Bob. I've seen pictures and videos of the canal and it always looks cold to me. How was your trip? Cold? I especially like your line, "For ships that sailed through mountains." ML

Sounds a lot more beautiful than the Panama Canal, that's for sure...Lovely descriptions, Bob....You have a keen eye, a talent for describing what you see, and a good heart. Yer mate from Washington State, len

This is a good work. I enjoyed the various images you bring to mind, which evoke not only the scenery surrounding the canal, but the work which went into it, and which goes on on it. Well done.
