What Is Poetry?
What Is Poetry?

Before you read this poem,
Take a look around you.
I'm serious, just do it
Please, tell yourself what you see?

Really, maybe some of this or some of that
Just some trees and grass?
Or maybe just four walls
And a window made of glass.

They seem so common and boring
That it almost puts you to sleep,
But, if you ever took the time
To really look at things, closely and more deeply,

You'd see every grain of that wood,
Or each drip on that painted wall,
Carries a story, of poetry
You'd see there's poetry in all.

Don't look at just that tree alone,
Understand what Mother Nature has truly shown
Look at every leaf and every beautiful bird.
When you see it all, you will find a different world

More than just a thousand words.
The grass becomes more than bright green grass
When you look at each and every blade.
You see a world of crickets
Performing a silent, moonlit serenade.

If you're looking to find poetry,
Just start by closing your eyes,
And you will hear the whispering
Of words floating by in the beautiful blue skies

Some say there is no poetry
When rappers scream out swears.
They just can't find the beauty
In that which raises the people’s hairs?

But if you listen carefully,
There's a rhythm when they curse.
Obscenities, roll off the tongue
When a rapper slips into another wild verse.

There's poetry in everything,
For nothing is only what you don't see.
So, open your eyes, open your ears, and open your heart,
You will find the poetry...in me.

Take off the blinders, so you can really see,
Can hear, start whispering,
Turn up the sound so, you can hear
Then you can take a closer look

Now, I ask, can you really feel me?
Extend your hand, and touch
This I will shout out honestly.
Yes, Can this really be?..

"What Is Poetry"?
OK, now you too, can really see....
What is true poetry?...

Well, y'know what? There's truth in rap, as is in any music....IF you stop to look at it, I mean, LOOK! There's a lot more to a Picasso than the lines. That, as an example, means what you said so aptly, here...."Take a look around you....extend your hand and touch" Deeper meanings. Well done, sir.
