When Love Is Conditional

WHEN LOVE IS CONDITIONAL

When love is conditional
it binds the soul
with chains that cannot be broken
It chokes until there is no breath left
to breathe
Vines of ivy, reaching up
with an ironclad grasp
draining away all signs of life
When rewards are dependent upon actions
and reactions are dependent upon surprise,
are they really worth the price?
Or, if my reward is "this"
because I said, "that,"
or, "that" should I say, "thus"
What is my reward,
but a hot, burning ember
from the gates of Hell?
You try to placate,
But all it does is suffocate
a flower already made fragile
by years of stunted growth

This is really good Mary, an imprisoned soul whilst clasped in chains, stifling stuff, you should have hit him with the frying pan gal. carlos

Oh, Mary, that conditional love, with all the trappings of prison, not allowing the soul to love in freedom~ The conditions being as in 'pretend' instead of a Natural flow of exchange~
Your work is deep and shows the reader the emotions and flavor of despair~
Great interesting piece, Ms. Charest~
Brava~
Margaret....the Bag Lady, who unconditionally loves but with no reflection~

Have lived through this. Or at least I thought at the time I was living through this. Well expressed.
