20 LINES
“Your poem must have 20 lines or less.

Remember, give your full name and address

So we can contact you if you should win”.

They’ll probably just throw mine in the bin.

“The work can be in blank verse or in rhyme”.

Oh, thanks for telling me. You took your time.

Now let’s see, are there any other rules?

Is there a theme we’re meant to write about?

“The theme of this year’s competition

Is what it’s like to be a poet”.

Right, that should be easy enough.

That’s the advice that every writer gets:

Write about the things you know the best.

And if there’s one thing I know all about,

It’s the plethora of problems facing poets;

The search for time to write, and inspiration,

The money spent on entering competitions,

And finally, the search for publishers.

Yes, that should be an easy one to write,

If only they’d allow me more than 20 little lines.

Good work, Peter. Sometimes it hardly seems worth the hassle. But what can you do? If you have to write, you have to write. And if you have to write, you may as well go for the gold. Keep your chin up. If anyone can tell the world what it's like to be a poet in 20 lines, it's you. Well done. ML
