The Life and Death of the Vampire, Part 1
Damp, and dark, and dignified
was the night before me,
the night I died-
And lo, though the wound on my neck was clear
and even though I have abandoned all that is dear
to me, I am here. Dead-
the ashes of a fire not fed
enogh wood to keep
the winds cold and relentless sleep
Dead I am, and dead I stay-
although I never age a day.
And still damp and dark and dignified
is the night before,
as was the night I died.
In the streets of London, Berlin or New York.
I can not remember.
But London deems clearest
in my memory.
And is the dearest
and most dreadful I know.
But lo-
that is a story for another fire.
As I told you-
And I will-
For it is in my memory still-
damp, and dark, and dignified,
was the night before me...
the night I died...
