Winter Wind
Winter Wind

The gray look of the sky
reminds me that itís not time for new growth.
Dead grass and old leaves all around.
Standing in front of a store I just left.
Wondering if the car will start in this weather
The harsh winter wind cuts into me.
The wind carries faint smell of snow mixed with diesel fuel.
Within that moment I am taken to another place

A crowded city street.
The sounds for buses and taxis.
The feeling of being home again.
I feel vary small against my surroundings.
I look around to see if Iím alone.
I feel safe to know that Iím not.
He takes my hand and asks if I can see.
I say no.
He picks me up and puts me on his shoulders.
I can see now.
A feeling of joy and magic fills my soul.

City blocks filled to the brim
with all that is joyous.
Endless rows of store windows,
decorated for the Christmas season.
I donít mind all the other people around.
To me, the only person there with me is him.

I get another jolt of the wind and realize
that Iím standing at my car.
tears are flowing like a river
as I think of him.
Knowing that he is thinking of me too
I look up into Heaven and say,
ďMerry Christmas Daddy. I love you.Ē
The winter wind blows again and I know
he is sending me his love too.
Author's Notes:
Memories of my Daddy taking me to downtown Chicago to see all the store displays. He passed away one month into my senoir year of highschool back in 1991 and his death is something I have always struggled with. And every year around Christmas, the memories come back along with the winter wind.
