Until I Became A Parent

Until I became a parent myself,
I never knew all the things you gave up for me.
Whether it was money to buy my new shoes,
when you needed them too,
or maybe taking me to swimming lessons,
when driving that half hour each way
was the last thing you felt like doing.

I never knew how exhausted you were,
because you always had energy left over for me.
I never thought I would miss picking row after row
of green beans and tomatoes with you,
until I moved away and had no garden.

I never realized how bewildered a parent can get;
trying to make the right choice:
trying to teach me to make the right choices,
and watching me fail, when I didn't.
Yet always there to console, and redirect.

I never meant to take for granted
everthing you have ever given and done for me.
I never knew what I cost you,
what you gave and never complained about,
Until I became a parent myself.

And when you let me go,
the hardest thing of all,
you did it with hope,
and support, and love.
And from the bottom of my heart,
I  say an inadequate thank you.
I  never knew,
until I become a parent,
just how much those words mean.
Thank You.

WOW! What a beautiful write. It brought me to tears, it is so true. I never realized all that my parents did for me until I became one myself. I love this poem, it's going on my fav list.
