Loved Ones
You can't hold on
And yet you can't let go
They're anchored in your heart more than you know

You want to protect them
To keep them from harm
To have them stay within reach of your arm

You want for them the very best
To pass with flying colors every test
But then they fail, and they let you down
Making you wish you had been around

Why do we love, only to be hurt?
Why do we see our loved ones end up in the dirt?

Life seems so cruel
And cold-hearted as it breaks us down
Determining to shatter our defenses
And stomp us into the ground

I want to do so much
But there's really little I can do
So, God, please keep them safe
And most of all, bring them back to you
