~The Innocence of A Child~

THE INNOCENCE OF A CHILD

The innocence of a child can be snatched as quickly as it was given. the world so cold,so unforgiven.

she looks up with with her big blue eyes, with a puzzled look asking why.

"why does my friend hurt my heart"? "why does she have to move"? "why must we part"?

tears fill her eyes, her first loss. only the beginning and at what cost?

"mommy and daddy why do you fight"? another first, no end of loss in sight.

a rock thrown hurtful words are said. "why don't those boys like me". "oh i wish i was dead."

he said he loved her and she gave him her all.

now she's having his baby, no letter, no phone call.

the innocence of a child can be snatched as quickly as it's been given.

a single mother raising her daughter she will be next to ask " why is the world so unforgiven"?

I like how your poem goes full circle.  From child to the mother of a child.  This is a fine example of how generational pain is carried on.

Sad, true and nicely written, Joe
