Chronicles of Alania (2)

*** Beowulf and the Dragon 2***

At King Beowulf’s Castle the King waits
His strongest and most trusted warrior is on his way
Oblivious to what has come to happen
Wiglaf walks in without delay

"My King, why have you summoned me?"
"I came as swiftly as I could"
"Is it something that could not wait"
"But I am here now, sire, as I should"

"Wiglaf, my most trusted of all"
"I'm glad you could come with great haste"
"A foul beast has come this way"
"And laid parts of my kingdom to waste."

"Wiglaf I ask thee to aid my endeavor"
"To strike this beast down and end its terror"
"I requested the aid of a warrior great"
"To help us and determine this beast's fate"

"This warrior comes from far and wide"
"To heed my request to end this threat"
"Renowned for strength and capable skills"
" Alania, should be here by sunset."

Wiglaf had heard this name before
And wondered: Am I not enough?
Why seek the help outside of the nation
I doubt he's really that tough

Sunset came and so did Alania
to Wiglaf's surprise she was a woman
of the three men sent only one returned
Left of him was hardly a swordsman

Wiglaf laughed out loud and said:
"A woman? The great Alania is female"
"Go home little miss or lay down on your back"
"Leave now, you women are too frail"

"You wouldn't last a second against me"
"Skinny build and hardly any muscle"
"I doubt you could survive a night with me"
"You can't be a warrior noble"

Alania’s eyes flashed and body stiffened

Her hand went to her blade hilt

“Were I not a guest in your King’s castle”

“Jackal, there would be blood spilt”

“As for lasting against you in combat”

"We can clear the hall for a test”

“You awkward bull, it wouldn’t take long”

“For me to show you who is best”

“A night with you, ill bred Norseman”!

“Will only happen in your dreams”

“For a man with little skill to offer”

“You set your aim high it seems”

“It wasn’t my king that felt the need”

“To call on a warrior from outside”

“If you wish to polish my weapons, boy”

“I’ll let you go along for the ride”

“Polish your weapons? Impudent wench”!

“You couldn’t heft my blade”

“I’ll teach you to know your place, woman”

“I’ll not leave your insult unpaid”

The two proud warriors crouched low

In classic combat stance

Each drew a dagger from their belt

And slowly began to advance

King Beowulf laughing, crossed the room

To stand between the two

“If either of you takes the others head”

“For warriors what shall I do”?

“I need both of you alive and well”

“We must track down the beast”

“The gamers have followed it to its lair”

“And on the morn we ride east”

“Wiglaf, Captain Alania is a soldier”

“And in our realm, a guest”

“You will accord her rank the respect due”

“Whilst she is on this quest”

“Alania, Captain Wiglaf meant no offense”

“His manner may be a bit rough”

“The dragon that plagues my lands must die”

“And mine captain is battle tough”

Both warriors return their daggers to their belts

King Beowulf laughing at them butting heads

Challenging looks being exchanged over small distance

The two mighty warriors are known to be hotheads

The King asks them to eat and sleep

They will be leaving at dawn

They need to be strong and fit

The tired Alania agrees and walks on

Wiglaf looks at her with a nasty grin

Alania simply passes him by and sticks out her tongue

It only makes him more angry and she knows

Exactly what she is doing and has done

Author's Notes:

Loosely based on the Beowulf and the Dragon Legend

BAS:

Hi all, hope you've enjoyed reading the tale as much as I did writing it, many hours spent, having fun while writing. I really enjoyed making this into what it now is, something beautiful or at least I think so. It was truly a pleasure to write with Jude and she taught me a few things. I hope to do it more often. Up to it, Jude?

Co-Written with Bas Ruijs

JUDE:

Bas and I are both lore junkies so we decided to try and do one together… I don’t think either of us knew what we were getting into. We wound up with the poem ‘epic that ate Cleveland’! It just kept getting bigger and bigger.

I want to tell you that Bas is a patient man, the fact that I am still breathing is a testament to his calm nature. Co-writing isn’t as easy as it sounds and sometimes there was as much saber clashing on IM as there was in the poem!

I hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed writing it…..

Bas, thank you for putting the stick down just in time! LOL

And Hell yes, I’ll hit the battle field with you anytime!.......... Jude

That was very gripping~the moment they both drew their daggers~very intense...I saw it clearly, and felt the heat! :o)

Great continuation from part one, pleasantly surprised to see it equals the excellence of the first.

Best wishes,
Dragon~
