~Father Mother Son~

A young child

Running through the fields and woods

Dreaming each night happily

The young child’s mother was a housewife and father was a soldier

Each day his mother watched and called the child an angel

And father his little soldier

Did nothing wrong child was perfect in each and everyway

But one night when he was sound asleep

His father was taken away

Sent to fight and serve his country far away

In the morning he walked down the stairs in his pyjamas happy

His mother turned around and burst into tears

His fears were soon a reality

This child’s father had died

He stared at his mother and no longer was happy

When the funeral was arranged

He planted a rose

And as the years past the child felt lost

But grew never as happy as he could have been

This child soon became a man

Joined the army

Went to war, and came back alive

And cried ‘that was for you daddy’

I like the prose-like format of this because it contributes to the basicness of it--that so many children had loving fathers lost in a battle of some kind. And the ending--perfect. Thank you for sharing.
