~Father Mother Son~
A young child Running through the fields and woodsDreaming each night happilyThe young child’s mother was a housewife and father was a soldierEach day his mother watched and called the child an angelAnd father his little soldierDid nothing wrong child was perfect in each and everywayBut one night when he was sound asleepHis father was taken awaySent to fight and serve his country far awayIn the morning he walked down the stairs in his pyjamas happy His mother turned around and burst into tearsHis fears were soon a realityThis child’s father had diedHe stared at his mother and no longer was happyWhen the funeral was arrangedHe planted a rose And as the years past the child felt lostBut grew never as happy as he could have beenThis child soon became a manJoined the army Went to war, and came back aliveAnd cried ‘that was for you daddy’

I like the prose-like format of this because it contributes to the basicness of it--that so many children had loving fathers lost in a battle of some kind. And the ending--perfect. Thank you for sharing.
