CHRISTMAS DREAMS
The sun is warm in the garden.  The breeze from the lake is playful and cool, bearing scents of jasmine and rustling the palms.  White egrets, etched against blue sky, swoop down to nest in the pines.  Foxy lies on the flagstones at my feet watching butterflies flit among the hibiscus.  I wonder if she dreams of fairies.

I read again your letter and feel my heart smiling.  You tell of snow piled high on rooftops; skaters on the frozen pond; icy winds that whisk away smoke from chimneys and blow your hat across the street; carolers wrapped in mufflers singing off key, but faces aglow.

You carry home the tree, hang harness bells on the door, and grumble about broken ornaments and twisted strings of lights.  You can't cut straight, you say, or wrap straight, but at last the offerings are covered in red paper and stacked under the lighted tree.  They won't notice anyway.  They covet what's inside.

When the eggnog and fruitcake are gone and echoes of delighted cries over gifts exchanged die down, you settle by the fire and dream of spring.

I'm sure Foxy is dreaming of fairies.  I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.

Author's Notes:
To you who have tormented me with your visions of sugarplums, your icy windowpanes, your prize-winning snowmen, ski trails down a mountainside, sleighbells in the night, and hot buttered rum by a roaring fire, knowing that I'm in for an eighty degree Christmas, I just want to say that I love you anyway.  mla

Oh how this makes me miss my Florida Christmas! (snow is SO overrated lol) I should like to say I wouldn't miss it a day if it were gone from my life, but then the first snow happens and you can't help but smile at it's mystic beauty. This poem was told with a meloncholy beauty and I loved it. Congrats on the award!

Ok, so you're not going to post a new write until I read all of your previous works. I'm starting. And by the way, I enjoyed this even though I'm a year late. But tis the season again. jp

We here in the great Northwest are going to sample a quite soggy, rainy day~! I should like to sit with you and Foxy and watch the egrets, smell the jasmine, and envelope the vision of butterflies~! This was truly a great find on this chilly, nasty day here, and I wish for you the very MERRIEST of Christmases~!!!!
.......Love, Margaret....

OK, I'm kind of having a muddy Christmas, myself. Where the swamp gas sizzle and sled rides fizzle...ok, ya getting the idea? LOL

Great write, ML, Christmas is a state of mind anyway..it'll be white if you want it to be..J

Been a long time since I've seen a white Christmas, but prefer it that way. It has been cold here at night though. Low in the twenties while sleeping and upper sixties during the day.

This is a beautiful scene you set before us, Mary Lou. Lovely and well described images combine to give us a gorgeous painting. Of course, as in many of your works, feelings are as important as images, and you describe them excellently too. The About is also a work of art in its own right. Very funny it is too. I'm sure all of us who enjoy Christmas in the cold and wind of December feel sorry for you.
