End of the English Summer

End of the English Summer

Corn storks point toward the sky

Rhythmic strokes lay flat the rye

Wheat that goes for miles and miles

Combines work into the night

Sweat that drips from head and neck

Water burbles in the beck

Blue green darts from here to there

Sticklebacks miss kingfisher’s stare

Cider in a brown stone jugs

Shooting parties and gun dogs

Fish that leap for leaping’s sake

Chilled Chablis from edge of lake

Cotton dresses and straw hats

Willow brooms and Cheshire cats

Stone flagged floors and whitewashed walls

Ghosts from pictures on the walls

Meadows tall with board leaf grass

Redbrick cottage and leaded glass

Here is where I lay me down

My head in England’s pleasant gown

And then my soul just soars away

As Vaughan Williams notes caress the day

Ralph Vaughan Williams, English composer.

Born in the Cotswolds in 1872
He died 1958 his ashes are interred in Westminster Abby.

His music evokes England.
