A Girl's Best Friend-Glata's Challenge
I awoke with a start, not knowing what it was that had roused me from my deep slumber, but I knew it was something terribly wrong. Cold fear crept up my spine, paralyzing me as I tried in vain to pierce the darkness with my wild eyed stare. The feeling that someone or something was in the room with me was overpowering. My darkest fear was confirmed when I heard the shuffle of irregular footsteps moving from the door towards my bed. I knew I had locked my bedroom door before retiring. It was a part of my nightly ritual ever since I moved into this apartment building. Clutching my mother’s quilt around me with a silent prayer, I reached for the gun I kept under the other pillows on the bed. A single lady living alone, I needed some protection, so I got a big one with a laser attachment just for this purpose. Holding my breath, I waited until I got a sense of where the something was. I took aim and turned on the laser. What!?! There was my ex-boyfriend standing there, leaning against the bedpost bleeding on my new rug!! “I could have killed you! How did you get in here?” I asked, taking my finger off the trigger, but not putting the gun down. “Remember, I am a jewel thief, and locks are my specialty,” he gasped through clenched teeth. “I got cut climbing out the window of a jewelry store and I need your help.” “What’s in it for me? I’m not going to jail for a low life like you.” “Help me out this one last time and you will never see me again, ever. I have enough now to retire to Rio if I wanted to. If you do, I will give you half of my take tonight and I will disappear forever,” he pleaded. I put the gun away in the safe this time and thought about what to do. After some haggling while I fixed up his wound, we came to an agreement. I got to keep the diamonds and he kept the rest of the junk. He sat on the floor while I cleaned up the plastic tarp and bandages. I would have to deal with the blood on my rug later. “Baby, you’re the best,” He used that sweet voice that got me in the first place, but that voice wasn’t going to work for him anymore. I was finished with his little games. “Do you have a way to get to the airport? If you don’t, take my car. I can get it at a later date” “I always said you were a great dame and now you’ve gone and proved it. I’ll never forget you for this.” He limped to the door, turned and blew me a kiss. I waited about thirty minutes, enough time for him to get close to the airport, passing the time by putting the bandages and plastic down again and then dialed 911. “Officer, I want to report a crime,” I sobbed. “He held me at gunpoint and bribed me with diamonds to fix his wounds. He mentioned Rio, so he may be on his way to the airport. He’s my ex-boyfriend and he took my car. A silver Mercedes, license number…..
