Mistress Mary

Mistress Mary, quite contrary

How does your garden grow?

With silver women and cockled old men

And pretty maids all in a row.

Each decomposing in their reposing,

Fertilizing all that I grow.

Becoming compost,

Leaving just their ghosts,

Thatís how my garden grows.

Author's Notes:
A dark and twisted nursery rhyme that was dark and twisted to begin with.  Mary, Mary, quite contrary was about Mary, Queen of Scots who was said to have tortured and beheaded over 300 people.  Silver bells--thumb screws, cockleshells--meant for men's private parts, and pretty maids--the guillotine, originally called the maiden, but shortened to the "maid".
