'Round Midnight at the Farmer's Market
At the Farmerís Market around midnight,
after the customers had left the scene,
the bananas and plantains had a fight.

The battle was hot enough to incite
the peaches to feud with the nectarines
at the Farmerís Market around midnight.

The arena was a slippery sight,
lemon referees kept them from browning,
the bananas and plantains had a fight.

The pineapples got in a few good bites,
the black and blueberries were bruised and mean
at the Farmerís Market around midnight.

The honeydew melons went white with fright
and cherries, the innocents, in between
the bananas and plantains had a fight.

The debate rages on, no end in sight
of apples and oranges, which oneís queen.
At the Farmerís Market around midnight
the bananas and plantains had a fight.

this was a lot of fun - my first read of your work - not at all familiar with the villanelle form, but i love the image you've painted - kind of like a fruit of the loom underwear commerical gone bad!  It's also great how you have fruits so similar square off against one another - peaches are great, but not if you don't like the fuzz!  a true award-winner

This is just so brilliant! - I have never read a funny villanelle before - I think that this must be the first ever. Absolutely hilarious - lets have more.

Enormously funny!!!  I may know a couple of those fruits...

From now on I will be looking suspiciously at the farmers market on the corner if I am ever driving by around midnight...
