Jerome, Once a Ghost Town
Jerome is the name, perched above 6,000 feet
explored with delight on each winding brick street
come for a ride to the very top of the hill
hair pin turns...what breathtaking beauty...
can you imagine the thrill?
I discovered what was once a deserted ghost-town
from an old copper wearing a crown
met a nice lady in a quaint shop simply called Lola
whimsical paintings caught my eye and made me shout voila
lost in the decision of which one would become mine
along came Jo Jo the artist... his eyes full of starshine.
He developed his art in New Orleans
among artists in Jackson Square
but Katrina came and taught him there was too much to beware.
searched for a new place...a home on much higher ground
it was the tiny town of Jerome atop the hill that was found
all of his paintings are happy and of the things that i adore
a smiling couple paddling a boat..greeted by cheerful ones
 who wait on the shore
a big grinning frog, patchwork quilts on the wall
kitties with big hats, bride and groom...
how i honestly desire them all
a girl with pink lips and a watermelon slice
they all have his eyes...oh what a surprise!
I chose the little girl, entitled... Reading in Bed
she holds her red story book, that waits to be read
so if you're looking for a sweet summer treat
I'll tell you where to go...
round the corner... at the end of the street
be sure to order the lemon mango soup...
oh it's so cool!
Its far more refreshing than a drink by the pool
Jerome, is my kind of town, just waiting for us to explore
Come back again next year...and discover what's more!
Author's Notes:
I was planning a trip to Sedona, Arizona for a few days but as spontaneous journeys go...I was drawn to a quaint little town called Jerome.  It used to be a ghost town until 15-20 yrs ago an artist community saw a vision and went to work...making it come alive, restoring the beautiful buildings, establishing many interesting shops, art galleries, pottery, hand made jewelry, one-of-a-kind items of clothing, the largest kaleidescope shop in the world, bistros, cafes...etc.
I met an artist who used to live in New Orleans before Katrina.
I plan to return every year, buy another painting...and explore!

Sounds like you made a real find, there...There are a few such restored tourist traps like this east of Sacramento, where I used to hang my hat...len

Linda: quite an adventure.  Sedona also has some interesting facts.
