This Mother's Strings
Through years and years of highs and lows
To life's pane I pressed my nose
Always outside looking in
Children laughing to my chagrin

A faceless babe you were to me
A branch missing from my tree
I dreamed of you and hoped to find
The figment imagined in my mind

Then a night in June with weather bad
I shed the tears no longer sad
I held you close a babe with face
Into my heart a special place

Reality exceeded my fantasies
A child so bright and eager to please
Is who you are and have always been
After so many losses I'll take the win

Through years and years of highs and lows
I've made mistakes this mother knows
I'll cut the strings as you make your way
But please know my love so they won't fray.
