But Why?

Dreams fulfilled she spoke to me
beyond the deep and life filled sea.
She spoke of love within her heart
a deeper love she could not start.
Where is the man she could not touch
with cracked hands and graying eyes?

My heart touched hers so long ago
a forgotten love beneath the snow.
Her hands were warm upon my breast,
our lives together, surly blessed.
When I was absent, off to war,
her eyes searched out new love.

We parted friends though words were cold.
to hide my tears my voice was bold.
Another man was in her life.
Another would have her for his wife.
As years went by I healed my hurt.
God erased my youthful pain.

Author's Notes:
When I came home from Vietnam on leave my girlfriend finally told me she had found someone else.  She said she hadn't told me when I was in Nam because she didn't want me to do something stupid.  I told her hat she had been watching too much TV.  And then ... I returned to Nam for another six months.  I was a lucky one.  I was having such a good time I extended my tour.
