Narcissism 201
We got married down on cripple creek
but you never gave me a diamond.
I had no way of knowing you were
the king of Magical Thinking...using illusion
and projection to dump your shame on me.
Has anyone heard of the pancake people
who puff themselves up with Arrogance?
To reinflate themselves they must diminish
or degrade someone else.
Why are you so Envious?
Why does your superiority breed contempt and
minimize the accomplishments of your friends?
You own the feeling of Entitlement; expecting
favorable treatment simply because you feel
you are uniquely special.
Defiance to this view triggers the narcissistic rage.
Exploitation is your tool; using others without regard
to their feelings, wrapping them in a winter of bleak.
Bad Boundaries...yours cannot be breached
but you refuse to recognize the lines others draw
in the sand for their own protection and survival.
You feel others exist only to meet your needs.
Narcissists make the worst partners; in business,
in friendship...and especially in marriage
for no partnership can exist with your
lack of empathy, shallow effect, superficial charm,
lack of remorse and guilt, and failure to accept
responsibility for your own actions.
You remarried, was it down on the same crippled creek?
I cry for her.
You say you've changed but narcissism is tatooed
on your heart...for it began when you were just a babe
and due to the defects in the nurturing you received.
Your mother didnt know her pain
was silently filling your tiny heart.
I don't want your diamonds..or your pearls.
I just want a calm, quiet life far from the jungles
of a narcissist.
Author's Notes:
I have done research on the subject of narcissism.  There are seven traits and can be found in capital letters. They are shamelessness, magical thinking, arrogance, envy, entitlement, exploitation, and bad boundaries.

'Self-absorbed' sums narcissism up nicely. Yes, the traits are definitely recognizable but usually after the fact.

Hello Linda Jo! :o)

You present us with an interesting study here, lady…

Unfortunately I experienced this study personally myself…equally unfortunatley, it sounds like a personal experience for you as well!

In a custody "battle”…the judge asked both I and the father of my children to go for "psychological assessments”…lo and behold…he was labelled Narcissist, and I was labelled as suffering from low self-esteem.  I think this says it all!

I underwent another assessment, recently, and AMAZINGLY (chuckles) they say my issues with low self esteem are gone!…Poof! lol…

Living with a narcissist will leave one IN THE DUST!…I’m so glad to hear you are also away from your narcissist partner…bet you’re feeling better about yourself too….now! :o)

The worst part about being a narcissist…is there is no hope for recovery, for the one with the problem will NEVER admit, even to themselves, that there is a problem to address~

I tried to find the best part that really touched me. Read it three times! Know what? There is none! ALL of it filled me with wonder.. This was exceptional Linda Jo. You used the word and gave it a life all its own. Amazing is what I call this. Powerful and amazing..

Favs list for sure...

A wonderful psychological study concealed within the boundaries a well-crafted story.  I also see a lot of the author's own experiences adding the spice of experience.  well done, my friend.

I've heard the word many times but never fully understood. WELL I do now :] This was excellent,  laced with sadness. Can they truely be happy with themselves?

To me "She had no way of knowing you were" is the best line. You used the round mouth here skillfully... very good job!

You've done a great job defining a narcissists.  One important thing to remember is that a narcissists is also very insecure.  Great poem

Linda Jo you did an excellent job on this Narcissim poem.  You've described them to a T.  I loved your poem.
