It Could Have Been Anything
"I'll see you for dinner" she says.
You smile at that;
and with a kiss on the head, she treads out the door
and never looks back.
The screen door slams
before you can say 'I love you'.
It's meaningless to; she already knows.
Oh, the drollness in that quote you've recited a thousand times,
never knowing in the back of your mind the bliss of that line.
Sometimes the redundant things really mean

It could have been anything,
it could have been nothing,
but it was something this time...

You gather the dishes and strain for your thoughts..
a penny for your thoughts;
you never thought of the cost.
Lost and alone in an empty shell you once called home.
The silent lull of the phone; a constant frustration,
demanding constant stipulations.
People feel pity when getting constant gratification.
They're "so sorry".
If only you had a nickel, you'd be wealthy.
But you'd rather not be lonely
as you're silently praying "come back and just hold me;
I'm not ready for good byes!"

It could have been anything,
it could have been nothing.
But it was something this time...

And time, that cruel, heartless leech,
feeding into your grief, while you're waiting for healing.
Time passes, you bleed.
You bleed, and you bleed.
10 years come and go, but it never dulls the feeling.
And each night 'til you die, little reels keep on playing,
the frames cut out here and there, but it's still mostly the same.
You're ashamed you can't recall the menu that night,
and you blame yourself for not saying "i love you" that one time.
You close your eyes, and when your life draws nigh,
with question on mind, you say your good byes,
if things had been different, would this be good bye?

It could have been anything,
it could have been nothing.

But that day, it was something.
Today, it was something.

Bravo on this moving masterpiece. You say it so well making us all question what it would be like if that day nothing happened. Great Write!

I wonder how many people still wonder where there loved ones have gone after the day? So many people were not named as nobody knew who was in the towers at that time. I hope they find the truth and peace even if it hurts, settlement can mean so much and allow you to try and move on.
