by Dean and FirestoneFeinberg

Once I was a sailor,
Who sailed the sea alone,
The wild waves of silver,
I followed far from home.
Upon my ship I traveled,
So self-assured was I,
I thought I needed nothing,
Except the starry sky.

Once I was a soldier,
My battles all my own,
I fought — I thought — with valor,
But if I’d only known:
No fight is ever finished,
No war is ever won,
But conflict is forever —
Neither ended nor begun.

Once I was a teacher
Who railed against all rule,
For I — the proud professor,
Knew better than the school.
I taught a larger lesson,
Of that I had no doubt,
The truth was — I was guessing:
Such wisdom was without.

Once I found my sweet-heart,
So perfect and so true,
'Tho ne’er I loved another,
I acted like a fool.
Although she made me happy —
A smile, a tear, a laugh,
I found myself alone one day —
Without my other half.

And now I am an agéd man,
Aware that youthful trust,
In self invested only,
Tho' — slowly — turns to rust.
For once I was a dreamer --
Who dreamt both big and bold
Redeemer last — the past become —
Too late -- I be too old.

But — ah! — then in the saying —
As if the moon at night —
My courage re-inspired —
Arise to fight the fight.

Author's Notes:
'THE FIGHT' is a collaboration between Dean and myself.  It took us about two weeks, I think, to finish the poem.   Writing together was both illuminating and fun!  --FirestoneFeinberg

David and Dean,

What a great poem to read, to start the early morning of....I thoroughly enjoyed this. Well thought out and so much devotion.

I love this dreamy reflective introspective write!

The eloquence and layered tempo of this adds to its ear-pleasing quality.  I really enjoyed reading this and am impressed by how much you can relay (in terms of years) in such succinct and honest fashions.

Aye, age does teach one many things often wisdom, but sometimes only further launches people into the throws of their rigid ascribed boundaries, and age only mummifies the closely held opinions and worldview.  YOU, David are centuries old in my eyes and I temper to assume that Dean, in being able to collaborate with you on this, also is of the aged wisdom kind.

I cannot wait to read more!!

Indeed, it was both illuminating and one of my
best fun ever on C-P. It was a real privilege
working with you on this amazing journey. Parts
of the poem touched me personally and deeply as we discussed, and I am sure
many men out there will relate to various parts of it, if not all!

I have the four
Chambers of my heart dedicated to keep and hold various things in line with the
quality of blood flowing in and out of them. some of the things that I keep and hold them for life; and replenish them with clean and nutritious blood, so they remain alive.

This experience joins to the others already feeding my thoughts and keeping my soul elevated, giving me inspirations at all times. Thank you for a wonderful journey.

David and Dean,  Bravo, wonderfully done.  I Just loved the progression of this write.  The stages of a man's life and the fact it can sometimes take that long to find wisdom and courage to fight the good fight.  Tina
