Today is a study of contradictions one minute

Overwhelming happiness and before you know

This has plummetted to an enormous low so

Confusing but at that time happiness returns

After a time this becomes common and one learns

What to expect but the constant swing although

Anticipated makes it none the less easier to know

Just where you will end up next it is a finite

Thing it can be measured but not the frequency

Of change it can occur once or twice or on a

Bad day several times however on a good day

The contented phase lasts all day constancy

In all things, there must be a question of balance, the up side must counter the down side and with any luck....prevail. Well done.

Here we have most poetic descriptions of some forms of bipolar illness.  No matter the length of phases, it ain't fun.  If we can only bear in mind -- when in a down-phase -- that the up-phase will return...  then we are somewhat ahead of the game...
