We owe a debt of gratitude

To those on Helmand's stony ground.

Resolve and great exactitude

Make the losses more profound.

Four hundred lives have now we lost

Whilst fighting on the barren slope;

Whilst families count the final cost

For those and theirs trying to cope.

So say a prayer for those who fell

Protecting us on our home shore;

We'll leave it down to them to tell

The cost and horrors of this war.
