Which Way?

Which Way?

Wrought the iron gates before him stood

The air was fresh the moon was shining;

Fear and terror spread round the dank wood

Eyes peered back at him and they -- sparkling;

The gates were mighty yet moved with ease

The path stood clear but which way to go?

Go forward aye chance of death increase;

But return and then the less you know;

A large black dog appeared on the lane

It was silent head lowered eyes glared;

The road to knowledge was filled with pain;

But he had to know now when he dared;

He crossed the threshold and took a breath

The smell in the air was that of death.
