Moon Lily....Part VI
Two weeks before the wedding, the New York Philharmonic had a concert in Miami, much to the delight of the two of them
Gerry and Melanie had been shuttling back and forth between Miami and New York for months now, whenever Melanie didn't have a concert
So they would be together for a few days, then she would go back to New York
and prepare to take a leave of absence from the symphony, to get married in Hawaii
She would be gone for a month and Gerry would do the same, taking leave from the consulting firm, so they could honeymoon in Hawaii for that whole time
Melanie still had to get her wedding dress, so she would spend the two weeks before, shopping around
Since neither one of them had their parents anymore, there was an issue as to who would give Melanie away at the altar
She had an uncle in New Jersey, who would be the logical choice, as he was her late father's brother. Problem solved
Her maid of honour would be Lynelle, her best friend and a violinist in the symphony, Gerry's brother Marcus would be the best man
Only 20 close friends and family would attend the wedding, as they didn't want a large party, plus which, the long journey from the mainland prevented a large turnout because of the great expense that would be incurred
It was just as well, because they just wanted a civil ceremony, with a judge or justice of the peace, whatever they had in Hawaii
Gerry ad his tux, a specially tailored number that cost him about 700 dollars but it was worth every penny, albeit he would only wear it one time
Melanie would be in Miami in a few days, so Gerry got his apartment in order, as they weren't going to be going anywhere special
It's been three weeks since they saw each other and they were going to make up for lost time....oh yeah
She arrived with the symphony on a Friday,so that would start the weekend right....right in bed!
The four days flew by and she was gone again, but would be back in six days, for the flight to Honolulu
"Babe, did you find your dress yet? Gerry asked, as they fnished breakfast, Melanie had to leave withe symphony in one hour
They kissed goodbye and parted company for the last time, because next week, they would be together always....except for Melanies concerts, but they'd figure something out
Melanie would be back two days before departure, so they could get everything in order for the long trip
She would be in at 8pm on Friday,at Miami International, on  flight number 357, Continental Airlines
They talked all week on the phone, making sure everything would be everything, all the last minute details....they were ready
Friday came fast and Gerry left work early, to get his last minute stuff done, before she arrived
He was watching the six o'clock news, when a bulletin interupted the regular news
Official word from a spoksman for Continental confirmed that Flight 357, out of Kennedy Airport, had crashed shortly after takeoff in New Jersey, in the vicinity of Vineland, in the southwest part of the state
No word on casualties as yet but updates would be forthcoming, through the evening....Gerry just stared at the television in disbelief
Sometime after 9pm, it was reported that the 129 passengers aboard Flight 357 were all lost in the survivors
Gerry felt somewhat dizzy and nauseous, as he turned off the television, bolting for the bathroom and vomited
He got in contact with the New Jersey State Police in Cumberland County, to find out more information
He found out that whatever bodies that were retrieved from the wreckage, were being taken temporarily to Vineland General Hospital, until Monday, when all the families could be reached to claim their slain loved ones
He was on the red eye to Atlantic City International and then a rented car to Vineland, hopefully Melanie would be there
Gerry arrived in Atlantic City at 2am and rented a car there, got directions to Vineland and the hospital
The hospital informed him that they wouldn't be posting the bodies until Saturday afternoon, so he stayed at a local motel overnight
Saturday afternoon came and Melanie was,in fact, there, as Gerry identified her remains. He would contact her Uncle David that afternoon
The funeral took place the following Wednesday, in Ithaca,New York, where her uncle and aunt lived, Gerry stayed at their house until Thursday and then flew home to Miami
He didn't go back to his apartment right away, staying with a friend in South Beach for a few days
He had Melanies ring and a few other presents for her at his place, including a 14x16 framed picture of the two of them, he wanted to surprise her with
He couldn't bear seeing any of that stuff straight away, so he didn't return to the apartment until a week later
Six months went by rather fast and he was working independantly, as a consulting engineer, out of West Palm Beach
He was a brick during the day, but cried himself to sleep every night, lost about 25 pounds and never went anywhere
After that strange night at the beach in Miami, where he thought he heard a woman's voice singing....her voice and the smell of her perfume, he would go back there again
It was a Monday night and a full moon was out, as he walked the sand of that beach, hoping for something....anything
He stayed on the beach for hours, but there was no voice, no singing, he decided to leave, finally
As he walked up the beach, he saw a flower on the sand....a Bird of Paradise, but what was it doing here? They only grew in Hawaii
He picked it up and held it, it reminded him of Melanie, when she wore one in her hair on Waikiki that one night and he smelled a familiar fragrance....Moon Lily!
"Omigod!" He exclaimed, she WAS here the other night, she was here to let him know she loved him and for him to move on, for his sake
"Melanie honey,, I love you!! I'll always love you....and you'll always love me, that's why the flower is here!" He cried
He realized that the flower meant for him to go on and love again, someday
He left the beach, with the flower, that was in perfect shape, it would be a last remembrance of Melanie's love for him
Another four months went by, it was spring again and the Bird of Paradise still lived, it's lovely fragrance still wafting in the air of Gerry's apartment, which was odd, because that flower doesn't live very long, only a few days, but this was four months later
Could it be that this flower was infused with Melanies life force? Was she really on the beach that night??Could this be Divine Intervention? It's up to you to decide....

Teriffic story telling Len. This had tropical imagery, love, and a mystic that keeps the reader

engaged through the whole story. Great job with this tragic love story.

I was afraid of something like this -- but I am comforted by -- yes -- the Divine Intervention...  What a special saga.  An epic, really.  Bravo!  --David
