The Scarlet In The Water

The Scarlet In The Water

The scarlet in the water tells a tale

It makes not a sound yet screams violence;

Fear rises in an incremental scale

Wrong has been done by our jurisprudence;

Red contaminates the soil and the grass

The smell of copper lingers on the nose;

Nature violated Hell come to pass

Desecrating every crocus and rose;

Bodies litter the verdant battle-field

Their corruption an abuse of beauty;

War has arrived again no-one will yield

Nature suffers a loss of sanctity;

Into the distance floats the red water

Away from the grim scene of such slaughter.

A brilliant condemnation of war: one that brings startling images and makes one think about the enormity of man's failure.  Little hope appears -- is there any? -- except that at the end -- when -- as the scarlet water snakes away -- we are allowed a vague sense of hope.    Magnificent poem. --David
