Old Dog

In weakness or strife-

It's the simplest things that bring meaning to life.

Sunlight filtering through the trees,

Autumn air tickling the leaves.

Old pup laying by my side-

Aw, man what a life.

Still spry my little guy-

Playing fetch, he thinks he can fly.

Ears perched back, tail a'thumping-

Come on Ma, let's go hunting!

Imaginary bunnies, squirrels and cats-

Will give chase to all, thou he won't catch.

Old pup- always true,

There when I'm blue.

A snuggle when I'm troubled-

85 lbs in your lap to offer a cuddle.

Fierce as a fighter, visitors feel such fright-

Let him lick you, his bark much worse than his bite.

But attempt his family real harm-

He will rip off your arm!

Enter without threat-

He will let you pet his neck.

Maybe a pat on the belly or a scratch on the back-

Better yet, a nice big snack!

Old dog, I know your days are few,

Each one a treasure- I will always love you.
