Sleepers

Bottles hidden
in bushes, in shoes,
under dirty rocks ...
under beds and
in ghostly, grey closets.
Each in its own
condition of unfulfillment...
never fulfillment.
Each leading its own
life of draining emptinesses.
Each leading to a life
of crying abandonment.
Each ... destroying weakened souls.
Some dead with decayed seals.
Never ... an unbroken seal,
always broken.
All leading empty lives
of stealth,
hiding from personal accountability.
Shhhh.... you might get
caught as you find them.
Quick ...
empty them further,
never letting their
contents of numbing,
tortured anesthetic
touch your questioning lips.
They are dangerous
sleepers in prey,
waiting to spring their
liquid death
on an unsuspecting child.
An empty bottle is gone.
The partly full,
 open ... hidden bottle
is the one to fear.
They destroy childhoods.

Author's Notes:
Alcoholics hide their stashes anywhere they are able.
Children find them.
I did.
He lost them ... when I did.

any addiction to any thing in life wether it be alcohol, drugs, sex, hoarding, shopping compulsively any addiction is devestating and always hidden . I find it is the persons soul that starts such pains. people should start there . leave the past in the past , find hope and peace and forgiveness and confidence and Most of  all  God in our hearts then the need to cling to an outside illusion of relief then the rest is all elementary. Great write Always Maggie.

I agree. Well done. Hits close to home, generations-even if you do not become an alcoholic yourself, still changes you.

A sad and compelling poem.  How many lives have been lost to those hidden bottles?  From what must we escape -- ourselves?  --David

If alcohol were discovered today it would without doubt become a banned substance, the mysery it brings to children, the destruction of relationships. I have personal experience of this with a member of my own family. But its here, attempts at prohibition were notably disasterous. A great insight. Bill H
