What Was Lost Forever
You have spent all of your days in total denial
having burnt all your bridges long behind you
ever since then, you have put yourself on trial
and the verdict has been e'er elusive, too
When you left, your heart was severely broken
shattered by the fateful decision that you made
and too choked up, for the words to be spoken
you simply allowed your memory to fade
On the day that you died, there was sadness
for your little ones had not yet been aware
and your mind was on the verge of madness
you would have given your life, to stay there
But the die was cast, from so very long before
it was already way past written into stone
you were forced to leave the ones that you adored
because the failure to adjust was your own
The journey that sad night was your living hell
because you never got the chance to say goodbye
your departure was so rushed, a sad truth to tell
and now all that you had hoped for, was to die
As a result, the little ones grew up without you
you missed their childhood and all of their joy
calls and letters....and that was all you could do
you felt broken and useless, as a discarded toy
And albeit you adjusted, o'er the many long years
the memories are as fresh, as if only yesterday
those precious memories can never dry the tears
though you're forgiven, you still make yourself pay
For the part that you left behind, sad, but true
was your very blood, your life, your love, your all
your only hope is that they will never forget you
and as they forgive, time once again, to stand tall

Your emotions sweep through every line. We oft are our own judge and jury refusing to allow ourselves peace. Excellently expressed Len, as always.

Well. That hit a little close.

It is embarrassing to me that I am unable to read long poems -- it's my ADHD.  It won't allow me the concentration I need.  But I assume, by way of the other comments, that this is great -- which i am accustomed to from you!  Forgive me...  --David

That was so very touching, the burning of bridges in relationships is an awefull thing yet I have seen it happen so many times. Highly emotive work. Bill
