Shadow Lurkers - Fiction
After the light is turned off
and the door pulled closed.
It's not until then the shadows
come alive and stare at me...

In the closet or under my bed;
I feel them waiting for me
to fall asleep or just be too tired
to try to fight them off...

Under my blanket and sheets I hide
hoping so hard it can shield me,
and keep harm away
or at least I pray it can...

Even though I try every night;
it doesn't help when they
are pulled aside with ease.
It can see me no matter what...

I try to be invisible,
but that just doesn't work out;
It can see all and
there's no place to hide...

No place to run
unless I want to get
into trouble for being
out of bed and awake...

To feel pain just
for trying to run
from another pain;
I just don't know...

Pain that makes it smile
along with tears that fall; it
takes great delight
with its eye all aglow...

Weak I feel until
I become numb;
after a while
it doesn't like that...

When I'm numb
it's not as much fun,
and it gets bored
until the next night...
Author's Notes:
What can children do when the one place they should feel safe is not 'safe'...
When shadows contain harmful things that are very much real; where can help be found?

At the begining this poem brought to mind nightmares I had as a small child believing the Boogie-Man lived

under my bed. I thought that if I stayed in the exact middle of the bed and covered up he couldn't reach me.

By the end of this poem it seemed more about very real dangers lurking in the shadows than imagined ones.

Wonderful write.

Linda
