Down and Out

Down and Out

You sleep beneath the boxes tarps

Surrounded by discarded sharps

The evidence of drug abuse

As prevalent as drink misuse;

No passers-by will stop to view

Your pied a terre have not a clue

Of how you came to be like this

Disshevelled drowning in the piss;

A once well-educated man

Descended to an also-ran

A steep and quick relentless slide

To Hell beyond so nearly died;

Yet all the while you slipped and fell

Did all things seem completely well

So in denial and lost to sin

Your heart and soul not linked within;

For lost your soul has fled and hid

Until such time the heart will bid

Once more its partner to success

Not flounder in your current mess;

You do not see it till it's lost

To Cardboard City final cost

The drugs the NPS and such

And wine which leaves you out of touch;

Such is the life, the day to day,

But what of night, the take-home pay?

For you need cash to fund the drink,

The drugs and food, but still you sink;

How many hours spent walking streets?

Competing rent boys offer treats,

Yet still you try to pull a trick,

A wrinkled aged and poisoned prick;

A tenner here, a fiver there,

For all disease have not a care;

And all the while you sink and fall,

Through rough detritus pick and trawl,

You reach a point where death looks good,

Legitimate if only could

You find the strength, the will, the time,

No fancy litany or rhyme,

No just a sleep, it will so end,

Despite the lack of any friend;

But now the crossroads does appear

A man in white with eyes so clear

Bends down to you extends a palm

And somewhere somewhence comes a psalm;

The rotting smell of rancidness

Is now replaced by something less

A purity of clean fresh air

A guiding light he takes you there;

You realise he intervenes

It comes to you in fractured scenes

Like time-lapse photos flicked and viewed

A vision clear but slightly slewed;

And then the light becomes too white

For everything is lost to sight

Corporeal? No longer changed

All Laws of Physics rearranged;

Here peace be King and equal all

Has come the end now to your fall

And in ascendance now you cry

United soul and spirit fly.

Life can sometimes be very crule for some of us Al. Although I've not been there as such, seen enough to understant this well witten pieace of imagery. I saw everything as I read it from top to buttom.  Hope all is well. ~Dean
