Upland
Iíve trod the oldest Way to reach the sea,
a Way of silent moors and fractured stone
where births the winterís ancient claim to own
the pith of every bracken, brush, and tree,
to lock in ice, as I would shelter thee Ė
if thou would only cleave to me alone;
if thou would only hear the heather moan,
and vanish in the misted spray with me.
The sky is ragged over all weíve made:
expanding whorls which burst and ache and die,
remains of when we once knew kith and kin;
but now I go bereft and as you bade,
and waiting on the sea-stones here I lie,
to taste your blood beneath the oceanís skin.
