I retreat
I retreat
To once my favorite
Place
That I found the safest
And the loveliest
In every way
It had a table,
A glass of wine,
Sometimes a piece of cheese
And bread
On a plate.
It could have a candle too
As it was often late.
There was a time it had a cat,
And sometimes this, and sometimes that.
On other times, it was
Busy and bright,
With a cup of coffee
And sheer delight
Of writing -
Oh, to write,
By day, by night...
Whenever the Muse would wish,
Whenever thoughts tore their leash,
Whenever a chance word
Claimed: "I'm a double-edged sword!"
Whenever a rhyme called:
"Try me!"
Whenever a love begged,
"Forget me"
Whenever gloom said,
"Humor me"
Whenever a trip was too long
And the sunsetoutside the bus window, too beautiful...
I would fail to explain this now -
And, honestly, I don't believe I ever could.
But here I am,
Building a bridge over a gap in time, then crossing it
I retreat to this place again,
The safest, the loveliest.
To write, oh, to write.

Author's Notes:
I haven't written in a long time. Somehow. I never officially stopped or quit, I never fell out of love with poetry. Over this time I translated poetry (for work), I discovered poets and poetic works I hadn't known before. I just wasn't writing.

Helen just beautifully express and written.  Most people don't know why we write poetry but you hopefully open the eyes of why do you write and what is this poem is about. And who do you write it for. unbelievable but true I have even  heard "Did you write that?" So I have now read this poem again and again because you covered it all to why, what, and who and did you? So I made this a favorite too. Poetry is my safe haven as well

thank you

just me

"Oh, to write,

By day, by night...

Whenever the Muse would wish,

Whenever thoughts tore their leash"

This is a magnificent piece of work and it takes the reader back in time once was majestic, mystical and meaningful.  The bridge you have successfully manged to build, surely worth crossing.
