I had an appointment with a man from Samarra
really, just a dropping by to chat,
a calling card, if you will.
He was in the neighborhood
thought it might be a good time
to introduce himself.
Things being what they are nowadays, he explained
with groups like the Hemlock Society and such around,
they're stripping him of his livelihood.
Who knew he worked on commission
and had a tribe to support?
So he encouraged me not to plan my departure,
but let him call the shot.
It felt like my long ago life insurance salesman
pitching me, but in reverse.
As you might imagine,
small talk was at a minimum,
so, I thanked him for his time,
which had an emptiness we both endured.
