Stop the Car
You cried the other day.
You were desperately sad.
Utterly lost.
I stopped the car
And hugged you in your car seat.
Held you and told you I was sorry.
That I don't know why grown-ups
Do the things they do.
You don't understand divorce.
But you know all about ghosts.
Mama's ghost still lives in Papa's house,
Doesn't it, sweetheart?
So we sat there together,
Parked on the curb,
And cried while your brother's brown eyes
Stared at us.
I'm so sorry you are sad, baby,
But I promise you this;
You'll grow to manhood
Knowing what it is to love.
And what it is to be loved.

This really reaches the heart, Dori. Kids don't understand divorce, but they're very good at love. Yours will always know about love. Good work. ML
